Not in Our Pews: Teaming Up to End Domestic Violence

This conference will work in partnership with and celebrate the 10th anniversary of Wings of Faith Ministries’ annual domestic violence training for faith leaders. The Rev. Al Miles is our featured speaker. He is the author of a number of books and articles on faith and domestic violence including Violence in Families: What Every Christian Needs to Know and Domestic Violence: What Every Pastor Needs to Know.
The Goals of this conference:
  • To build partnerships between congregational leaders, service providers, law enforcement programs and others who support victims of domestic violence.
  • To provide faith and congregational leaders with strategies and resources to effectively and safely meet the needs of victims and families
  • To equip clergy and lay leaders to assist victims to make thoughtful decisions from a theological perspective while remaining in relationship with God and their faith community
  • To explore how faith communities might work to end domestic violence
  • To help congregational leaders navigate a congregation that is impacted by domestic violence

The quickly expanding use of technology threatens privacy and creates new risks for domestic violence victims. At the same time it offers valuable tools to decrease isolation, offer services and share knowledge. Training participants will explore the connection between technology and domestic violence, and discover resources for managing technology safety risks. Training provided by WCADV Technology Coordinator. We will keep you updated on future webinars and how you can access recordings. This is one of 4 webinars WCADV will present in 2010 and is free to members.

Too often, financial instability is both an obstacle to escaping domestic violence, and a reason for returning to an abuser. For most survivors, money and finances play a key role in considering the possibility of leaving. In pursuit of economic self sufficiency survivors need knowledge and skills that will help them make informed decisions about economic challenges they face. This training was designed to help advocates provide survivors with resources and strategies.

This Community Dialogue seeks to promote men’s action and involvement in eradicating men’s violence against women. Join with us in a discussion that explores the root causes of gender violence, including men’s attitudes toward women and the norms and cultures that support the violence. Juan Carlos Areán of the Family Violence Prevention Fund in San Francisco, CA, will offer a presentation, followed by a panel discussion of local violence-prevention leaders and a community dialogue. Financial Empowerment Training Webinar Session I

This webinar is the first in a two-part series (see June 23 for Session II). The content has been condensed from a 4-hour training that was designed to help advocates provide survivors with: Resources to strengthen confidence in order to take action; Strategies to address financial and safety challenges of ending a relationship with an abuser; Resources for working through quality-of-life changes they may encounter when fleeing abuse; Strategies to work through challenges that occur after identity or name change and abuser misuse of her personal records; Tactics to understand financial fundamentals and basic steps to building a strong financial base, including budgeting, saving, building credit, and managing debt.

Webinar - Harassment Restraining Orders

Please join us for a webinar, conducted by Legal Dept Director Tess Meuer, to find out about all of the changes to restraining orders that will be effective September 1. We will discuss harassment restraining orders, which will become more parallel to domestic abuse restraining orders. Additional changes we will discuss include: a uniform procedure for de novo review of a court commissioner’s decision; requirements for the court to follow prior to allowing a change from a domestic abuse order to a harassment order; the inclusion of space on petitions to indicate any other proceedings which prohibit contact between the parties; and a process for maintaining a confidential file for the petitioner’s address.
