A Story From the Heart

Be an active citizen and help put liberty into action by making a tax-deductible contribution to the Wisconsin Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

Why give to WCADV?

The Wisconsin Coalition Against Domestic Violence (WCADV) is the perfect organization for your gift if you are interested in helping adults and their children become safer in their own homes and neighborhoods. Your contributions will go toward training staff of local domestic violence organizations, attorneys, judges, physicians and others who assist families. Your gift will also support our social change and policy work and efforts to improve systems and protective laws that affect the safety of victims and their children and give them a better chance of living a happy and healthy life free of violence in their homes. And it finances important organizing work with former victims, with people of color and with other groups. 100% of our Legal Project contributions are passed on to private bar attorneys to provide direct legal representation for domestic violence victims to obtain restraining orders or in divorce, custody, immigration or appellate cases.

One of WCADV's signature efforts is our work to address domestic violence in marginalized populations. WCADV maintains a strong focus on addressing the impact of domestic violence on children who witness domestic violence, elders and people with disabilities. We are committed to building a response that leaves no one behind and works for Wisconsin's American Indians, African Americans, Hmong and Latinos. We are actively working to ensure that lesbian, gay, bi- and transgender victims have services available. We are doing this by actively engaging communities that represent these groups, by changing our own culture to ensure we embody theirs and by supporting development of leadership in WCADV from those communities. We firmly operate from a belief that victims themselves are the best source of advice about how to combat domestic violence. In 2003, we established a prevention initiative that will focus heavily on these marginalized communities with their full involvement.

For 25 years the Wisconsin Coalition Against Domestic Violence (WCADV) has been Wisconsin's statewide resource center for its member agencies, programs and individuals. We provide technical assistance and training to our members and other professionals who work directly with victims of domestic violence, their children and perpetrators. For more information about our programs, visit the What We Do section of this web site. We also develop and distribute manuals and booklets on best practices and publish a quarterly educational journal for our members. WCADV staff is actively involved in national and state leadership on violence against women issues to ensure that Wisconsin's voice is represented in policy development. The WCADV staff also travels throughout Wisconsin facilitating support and membership meetings with local program staff and directors. Most importantly, WCADV continues to expand programs to better serve communities of color, formerly battered women, children, older people, people with disabilities and other under-represented groups.

How critical are your donations to WCADV?

With your contribution you can play an active role in ending violence in our homes and neighborhoods. Individual donations are a primary source of funding for our public policy and organizing efforts. And most of our government grants require a $1 match for every $3 received. Therefore, donations, private sector and foundation grants are critical to our work.
