Education
Ideas about domestic violence come from many different sources. From what we learn from the media, in our schools, families and neighborhoods we know that domestic violence remains, unfortunately, rooted in the very fabric of our society. One has only to open the local newspaper to know that these crimes continue to occur with alarming frequency, impacting each one of us, whether we are young or old, and regardless of our race, class, sexual orientation, gender or other differences. With estimates ranging from 960,000 to three million incidents of domestic abuse annually domestic abuse is a crime that needs to be stopped.
What we don't learn are the dynamics of domestic violence, how to identify domestic violence when it is happening in your home or neighborhood and steps a community can take to try to stop domestic violence. The Education Department of WCADV seeks to educate the public on the harsh realities of domestic violence and how to best help victims, their children and abusers. Through the development of resources and trainings we engage people to prevent domestic abuse. Our efforts seek to raise awareness as well as serve as a clearinghouse of information and tools for change.
