Harrassment Restraining Orders - August 11, 2010
This is a recording of the webinar conducted by Legal Department Director Tess Meuer. It covers all of the changes to restraining orders that will be effective September 1, 2010. Harassment restraining orders will become more parallel to domestic abuse restraining orders. Additional changes discussed include: a uniform procedure for de novo review of a court commissioner’s decision; requirements for the court to follow prior to allowing a change from a domestic abuse order to a harassment order; the inclusion of space on petitions to indicate any other proceedings which prohibit contact between the parties; and a process for maintaining a confidential file for the petitioner’s address.

The content has been condensed from a 4-hour training that was designed to help advocates provide survivors with: Resources to strengthen confidence in order to take action; Strategies to address financial and safety challenges of ending a relationship with an abuser; Resources for working through quality-of-life changes they may encounter when fleeing abuse; Strategies to work through challenges that occur after identity or name change and abuser misuse of her personal records; Tactics to understand financial fundamentals and basic steps to building a strong financial base, including budgeting, saving, building credit, and managing debt.
